Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Police report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Officers then found multiple other smeared automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state preliminary tests show the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; officials are currently not informed of any injuries in relation with the incident," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were working "to resolve the case" and have requested to the residents for information.
A senior official said the incident left him speechless and required to be resolved rapidly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing attack five years ago," he posted on online, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a gunman targeting people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
